Medgidia, a suffering city

The city of Medgidia is located in one of the poorest areas of Romania. For four centuries the area was under Turkish occupation, a time when the Muslim influence was deep engraved in the customs and beliefs of the people. After the Communism has expanded in Eastern Europe, this area, like the rest of Romania, was the scene of some paranoiac type projects initiated by the dictator Ceausescu. Since Communism fell, in 1989, the area is struggling to recover from poverty. For many years Medgidia was the top one city in unemployment.

Pastor Vasilică Croitor led the way in promoting a change in this region. His team works in Medgidia and in the surrounding villages. Most of the workers he trained came there as volunteers. These people are well educated and could easily get a well paid job, but chose instead to work among the Romanians, Turkish and Gypsies who need to change their lives.

These people need your support. Together we will be more effective in bringing the love, the encouragement and social support to the people that desperately need it.

Changing lives one by one

We hosted our fifth annual School Fun Day last week Wednesday, and it was such a fun time with our students’ families and friends.

The 10th school year is off and running.  We started out as a literacy program and now, we actually have kids in high school!  But our project is so much more than a homework program.  For more than 10 years we have invested in our families who are mostly living in extreme poverty.  Each day we resolve very challenging situations, things ‘normal’ society couldn’t even imagine is still happening in the 21st century.

One month ago, the ‘husband’ (not legally) of one of our families died from extreme alcohol abuse.  He did not have birth certificate and no identity whatsoever, therefore, they would not release his body to be buried.  After 5 weeks, of helping the family with the bureaucracy they were able to bury him. A husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who had no papers.  After 30 something years of life, on record, he did not exist or have a legal identity.

Cristi, 20 years old, in our literacy program, with heart to go to school, has no birth certificate.  The family he grew up with never told him they are not his parents.  After many months exhausting all our possibilities and sorting through all the family lies, we hired an attorney to advocate on behalf of Cristi.  After his hearing in court more lies were revealed and now there is more bureaucracy.  For over one year we have tried to help validate Cristi’s identity.

Melisa (18), more than 5 years ago, our team worked over a year to successfully obtain a birth certificate for her.  I am sorry to report her mother then lost the original certificate.  (Thank God we have copy at center)  We have spent the summer completing the documents to receive a replacement certificate.  Melisa gave birth to baby boy in August, but the hospital would not issue the baby a birth certificate because Melisa does not have an original.  Now, we fight for her original birth certificate so we can then get our sweet baby boy, Iamaci (Yamach) an identity.

Each day we listen to tragic stories about leaking roofs, shacks (houses) built from random materials crumbling and falling, no access to water, electricity, food or heat.  It is overwhelming some days but we can’t give up!  We have to keep sorting through the issues and asking God each moment, “What is the right thing to do?”  Today, the right thing to say is thank you!  I am so grateful for all your love and support because you have helped sustain me, our kids and their families.
